An Excursion to Krakatau Volcano

What to Bring
Backpack (no luggage), hiking shoes, swimsuit, enough clothes to wear, towel, medicines /drugs, sun cream, camera, battery
Your excursion departs from carita beach. If the waves are too big we will walk along the beach to board our boat where the fishing boat are moored.
Your boat has twin outboard 40hp motors, a deck sun cover, life jackets, a skipper, a boatman wil accompany us.
Water, snack and lunch are provided.
The distance to Krakatau is about 45km, we pass by towering island of Rakata. You may see dolphins and flying fish aong the way.
Shortly after passing Rakata, we sit for a while just off the rocky shore of Krakatau. We will beable to view the cater, and ussualy a number of active steam vents both on the crater and often on the slopes of the volcanic cone.
We then pass around the island and land on the black sand beach of the island. Krakatau Island is designated as a nature reserve. It is a World Heritage Site. Nothing should be taken from the island and the vegetation and environment are protected.
At the landing place information board give the history of the island and show maps of the area. While you are on the island yourlunch will anchor just offshore. As we leave the beach we walk through a forested area. You may see colorful butterflies along the way.
As we slowly climb the pathway we emerge on to a sandy slope that leads up towards the edge of the forest. You my see some flowering plants scattered among the vegetation. As we emerge from the forest the peak of Krakatau can be send beyond a low ridge.
A post marks the boundary of where you can walk to. Krakatau is still active and may erupt at any time. Both the park administration and your guide must ensure your safety so please respect these restrictions.
On the walk back to the boat you may see dead branches in the trees. These have been damaged and broken by debris falling from an eruption. Back at the beach you may like to walk around the shore. Youcan see more interesting bits of flotsam including lots of volcanic pumice. Accros the chanel you can see the island of Rakata.
We reboard the launch and the leave the island of Krakatau.
Krakatau island with is steaming craterand dramatic history recedes ass we head swimming and snorkel. Sometimes fisherman from a nearby island pull their boats up on this beach.
When we return to Carita Beach you may like to wander among the colorful fishing boats.
